ICT as Platform for change

“You never miss the water until the well runs dry” and maybe the same saying goes for the internet. How many times has your ISP deprived you and your right to access the internet? How many times have you been frustrated? But besides not being able to update what you had for dinner last night or updating your profile picture, there are actually far bigger things this world would have missed without internet. In fact, ICT in general has played a key role in our history.

The Role of ICT in Recent History

Throughout recent history, the Philippines have been one of a few nations that demonstrate unity for a call to action or social change. These campaigns for social change would have not been successful if it were not for ICT.

1. EDSA (PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION). The people power revolution lasted from 1083 to 1986. During a radio broadcast of Radio Veritas, Cardinal Sin encouraged the Filipinos to help end the regime of then President Ferdinand Marcos. A major protest took place along the EDSA from February 22 to 25, 1986 involving two million Filipinos from different sectors. These included civilians, political parties, the military and religious groups.

2. EDSA DOS. This is also known as the 2001 EDSA Revolution, happened during January 17 to 21, 2001. It was fueled after 11 prosecutors of the President Joseph Estrada walked out of the impeachment trial. As a result, the crowd in EDSA grew over the course of a few days through text brigades.

3. Million People March. This is a series pf protest that mainly took place in Luneta Park from august 22 to 26, 2013. There were also several demonstrations that happened around key cities in the Philippines and some location overseas. The organizers and promoters of the Million People March used Facebook and Change.org as their, mediums.

4. Yolanda People Finder. Recent storms in Philippines history gave birth to the People finder database powered by Google. During typhoon Yolanda, the people finder was a vital tool for people across the globe to track the situation of their relatives. This proved to be successful and is now adapted by more organizations to help people track relatives during calamities.

Change.org

Change.org is dubbed as the “world’s platform for change” where anyone from the online community can create a petition and ask others to sign in it. During the past times petitions are only done through signing a paper, usually done by a group asking for signatures via travel. Change.org gives access to more people by allowing the online community to affix their digital signatures on petition.

Signing an Online Petition

1. Visit Change.org

2. Change.org works this way. If this is your first time to use Change.org, click Sign up or log in with Facebook. Otherwise, just input your log in details.

3. You can then start your own petition, but for now click on any petition you want under tending petitions.

4. Read the petitions description to see if this petition matters to you. If it is, sign the petition by filling up the information on the right side of the screen.

5. Share the petition on Facebook to promote it.

Alternatively, you can check out petitions of your friends on Facebook, and then click on those petitions to read about it and sign it.

The iloveyou virus, was a computer worm that attacked tens of millions of Windows personal computers on and after 4 May 2000 local time in the Philippines when it started spreading as an email message with the subject line "ILOVEYOU" and the attachment "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs".

Anyway Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines is considered as a "Platform for change" because it is use as the national government portal, people can learn more about the Philippine government, its structure, how government works and the people behind it.

    1. Good question Hannah :)
      According to change.org.
How can I tell if my change.org mail is fake?

      1: An odd “From” domain
Our mail will always come from the domain change.org, without any random letters or numbers and never from a personal account such as Yahoo or AOL.

      2: Mismatched or masked links
Suspicious links are often the main giveaway of a message from a fake account. Mouse over the top of each URL in the message without actually clicking; you’ll see the actual hyperlinked address, or it may appear in a bar at the bottom or top of your screen. If the hyperlinked address does not include change.org, the message is probably fraudulent or malicious.

3: Links contain a misleading domain name
Change.org must be the main domain in the links. For example, the domain name mail.change.org is a child domain of change.org because change.org appears at the end of the full domain name (on the right-hand side). On the other hand, change.org.spammersdomain.com does not originate from change.org because the reference to change.org is on the left side of the domain name.

This is a very common trick. All the links in our mail will end with change.org.

4: The message contains poor spelling and grammar
Although many change.org petitions are started by users who may not have perfect grammar or spelling, anything coming directly from change.org should be spelled correctly and look professional, with the usual change.org branding.

5: The message asks for personal information
Change.org will never send an email asking for a password, bank details, credit card number, or the answer to a security question.

      6: The message contains attachments
Change.org messages will very rarely have attachments. You should never open an attachment you do not trust.

7: Something just doesn't look right
If your gut tells you something is wrong with the email, trust that instinct.

    1. Hi Hannah this two are the successful petitions according to the Change.org. First is Rental car industry stops fighting vehicle safety- Callie Houck’s two daughters died in a car crash in 2004. The reason? Enterprise had given them a rental car that was under recall for safety defects. Due to a federal loophole, what Enterprise did wasn’t illegal. And for the past 8 years, the company continued handing out recalled cars to customers and blocking legislation intended to stop the practice. Then, early this year, Callie launched a Change.org petition asking Enterprise to stop blocking the legislation. After months of resisting, Enterprise finally agreed to call off its opposition in October, marking a major shift in the rental car industry.
And Second Cellphone companies take on domestic violence- When Cynthia Butterworth’s sister escaped from her abusive husband, she needed to cancel their shared cell phone contract so he couldn’t track her phone calls. But when she called Verizon, they said it would cost $500 to end her contract – money she simply didn’t have. Finally, after a massive Change.org petition, Cynthia got Verizon to change its policies so domestic abuse victims like Cynthia's sister could easily cancel their contracts. Then word spread, and another domestic abuse victim, "Jane Doe," launched her own Change.org petition, asking Sprint to follow suit. And just last month, Sprint agreed to waive its $200 cancellation fee in cases of domestic violence victims. I think that the petitions in the change.org did not mention on how many signatures they get in this appeal . I hope this answer helps you :)

    1. The Use of Public Cloud Technology

Cloud technology will continue to evolve in 2016, as government entities seek to find more efficient, affordable and secure ways to make public services available to citizens. The Federal Cloud Computing Strategy, implemented in 2011, required federal agencies to consider using cloud-based technology -- and it is just now beginning to reap positive results among larger state entities.

In fact, the public sector has not only experienced more efficiency, but it’s also starting to trust the security and reliability of storing sensitive information in the cloud. Government entities can have total control of data, but also have the ability to share this data with the public via hybrid cloud technology.

Federal adoption is paving the way for smaller, more resource-stretched local governments to follow suit. In 2016, we should take note of public sector services that leverage more hybrid cloud technology in order to allocate IT resources and expensive enterprise software that’s already been purchased. Reducing costs and speeding up deployment and procurement will drive this trend.

As government entities seek to share enterprise resources, greater integration in the cloud will also be key. Developing internal cloud infrastructure will cease as governments now see the value in leveraging commercial government cloud technology from providers like Microsoft and IBM.

    1. Mobile Engagement

It should come as no surprise that individuals are using multiple devices to accomplish a single task and smartphones and iPad devices have officially outpaced the use of laptops, according to comScore. But the government has been much slower to follow suit. In 2016, engaging with citizens via mobile will continue to evolve as mobility remains top of mind for public services of all kinds, from transportation to tax reporting and localized health care.

In light of this, we can expect government entities to test the waters with engaging citizens via mobile. Whether it’s making public services and data available on multiple channels or communicating with citizens via online chat, text message or forums, the public sector knows that to put the needs of tax-paying citizens first, it must start making services and communication available via multiple devices and channels.

A trend for governments to start leveraging their own platforms as "services” to reach the public should also be watched in 2016. Local governments will make use of their existing infrastructure by allowing public access to services, for example, filing and e-signing documents for health care programs, as well as public data, more available to local citizens.

  12. It's incredible to see some events in this blog that shows ICT is essential for objective purposes of a group ,rather millions of people. Somehow, does it sound vias mam from other people who is not technically updated through social media networking sites?

    1. In our generation, everyone is connected to one another in this vast network generated by the Internet. People use the social media sites to communicate with other people but in that case, people who is not involved with some social media sites is really sound vias because they are not updated on what's going on in the world of social networking sites like when it comes to suspending our class. Our governor use the twitter and Facebook to inform us about the class suspension. Students like us depend on this sites because the news in our television is sometimes late when it comes to some trending news and also when it comes to suspending our class.

Criminals, marketers, and other persons can easily get information from students when they are online. 1. Disadvantage:
      Preparation Time.
It takes a lot of preparation time to effectively use the Net for education. In addition to designing Internet based lesson plans, we may have to surf the Internet to download lesson plans and adapt them to support the curriculum objectives or visit sites to select those appropriate for classes. We have no choice but prepare in order to help your students become responsible user of the Internet.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. here some advantages and disadvantages of ICT:

      advantages:
      1.Motivating Factor.
The Internet can act as a motivating tool for many students. Young people are very captivated with technology. Educators must capitalize on this interest, excitement, and enthusiasm about the Internet for the purpose of enhancing learning. For already enthusiastic learners, the Internet allows you to provide them with additional learning activities not readily available in the classroom.
      2. Fast Communication.
The Internet promotes fast communication across geographical barriers. Your students can join collaborative projects that involve students from different states, countries or continents. This type of learning experience was not possible before the Internet. This is a unique learning experience very essential for each of our students, as the world is becoming one big community

      Disadvantages:
      1.Plagiarism.
Apart from Web sites that claim to help students write term papers, there are numerous cases of students downloading information from the Net and turning them in for grades. We can minimize this problem by requiring students to cite research sources. There is an online service, Plagiarism.org at http://www.plagiarism.org/, which can assist us in minimizing cases of plagiarism in the class. This service claims to prevent plagiarism by determining if a term paper has been copied from the Internet or not.
      2.New Administrative Responsibilities.
Teaching using the Internet brings to bear a new set of administrative demands on the teacher and the school administration. These include development and implementation of acceptable use policy, training, developing new evaluation criteria as needed, and addressing parents’ concerns.
